I would recommend the 1250's for the exotic gear though ive always had good chances with them. I've honestly had a better chance doing the 1250 Legend Lost Sectors. Out of the two I've done, I got 1 new Exotic my first try, and the 2nd new exotic on my 2nd try of another Lost Sector. As well as I believe 3 other exotics at other Lost Sectors.

It's uncommon but very possible to have a long dry spell.
