Spring and President is not safe to be walking along; you're probably OK inside a locked house. Spring and King would be worse. While in Charleston head across to Mount Pleasant, just across the bridge are some good seafood restaurants there. We usually would stay in North Charleston as its less expensive (about 15 to 20 minutes to Charleston downtown. Don't eat at the Noisy Oyster, very loud, lives up to its name and food not very good. Some good day trips to consider: Folly Beach will be a day trip in and of itself. Beaufort is charming and I highly recommend. If you want a real understanding of Charleston's history, I would visit one of the Plantations: Middleburg Place, Magnolia or Drayton Hall. Each site is very different.

I-77 South all the way to I-26 on the south end of Columbia, SC. I-26 East to Charleston, SC. This is a 13 hour drive, not counting stops, so you may want to spend the night somewhere to relax. I have stayed at the Holiday Inn in Beckley, WV several times and have always had a nice room. (Beckley would be about the midway point for you.)

April is wonderful "beach weather", and possibly our favorite time to be on Kiawah. The air and water temps increase daily, through the month. In mid-April, the water temps will probably still be cool (by South Carolina standards). If we have a few days of full sun, the ocean will warm up considerably.
