Here's my NYC Subway route preferences: IRT Broadway-7th Avenue Line. R46 was fine on A, but now it gets old on N/Q. The A has the oldest and the newest cars. When they linked them up and renumbered them in 1993 they mixed them up. The R46's were 500-1278 with the A-A units being 1228-1278 (These are the only cars that were never mixed up since they were A-A units).

Short answer: the bulk of Tokyo's system is less than 50 years old and nearly all of NYC's system is over 100 years old. The R262 contract was cancelled when it was decided that CBTC would not be expanded in the IRT, so we can get another 10-20 years out of the 62s. It's not that they 'dont care' the MTA got tired of paying out injuries when the drivers attempted to enforce the fare. I remember bus drivers constantly fighting with customers in the 90s over the farebox. Now the drivers are in glass cages.
