If the rifle has two numbers then subtract that from 100 and the answer is the year made. Any 1887 marlin gun, as far as my research shows, would have no letter prefix. Using my blue book and the brophy book of Marlin firearms, there wasn't yet a Marlin offering in 1887 in 22LR. Their first 22LR lever was in 1891, the model 1891. The models 1891, 1892, 1897 and the 39 are the older 22s that marlin made.
