When looking at Zbrush core, one of my first thoughts was "Glad this wasn't out when I was getting ready to buy, because I might have gotten this version" Zbrush is amazing, gimped Zbrush is not and other tools can be used instead. That being said, if you do have the money for full Zbrush, I would get that. Best decision I've made.

No live boolean (often used to clean cut edges) in zbrush core so hard surface modeling might be pretty annoying. I'm still a beginner though so wait for my advance responses. You should mask the portion of the mesh you want to modify, than press Ctrl+W to create a polygroup of it, hide it and delete it (by pressing delete hidden in the Geometry menú) than you press close holes from the same menú.
