Also: Rotate the motor while watching the intake valve open and close. Go to the T mark on the flywheel. This is TDC on the compression stroke. The most common problem is that the shift rod is out of adjustment. It's probably moving too far towards the low gear and when it high it's not locked in all of the way. I am posting the adjustment diagram below. If adjusting it doesn't help you out then you know that chances are there are worn parts in the engine. (Not very common.)
