In my opinion, WICO is the only mod that significantly improves on the vanilla NPCs without making everyone look too pretty. Yeah, WICO marks A LOT of NPCs as Protected (only player can kill them) and some of them as Essential as far as I know (noone can kill them). However you can VERY easily revert those changes back to original values (or for example to the ones provided by Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch).WICO is loaded under USSEP and therefore overwrites most fixes applied to NPCs by USSEP.
