There are two types of gems, Arcane - magic dmg and Fierce - Physical dmg. Grind for the gem required for your class. Also stick with Shadow gear, and buy Stellar when you have enough flux. Just do dungeons, I know it's hard you feel like you get nothing done. But through the dungeons I got a gem box, which gave me a stellar gem.
Max your crystal level 3 gear. Make all your cosmic gems have boosts on light (you can check/edit them at gem forge, remember to do it only with good stellar gems). Use Berserk Battler cosmic empowered gem (provides extra light while hitting enemies).
