That is the correct procedure. However, if the knocking noise stopped, whatever was causing the noise wasn't spinning. That's how you've eliminated the engine internals. If the noise continues when the torque converter is no longer attached and spinning, then the noise is coming from something that's moving/spinning. I know it’s an old thread, but the L5P in the 2020 is the noisiest, most unpleasant Duramax to date. The thumping, ticking, screeching, and what I’m assuming is injector knock, is almost Unbearable. Been in 3 different 2020’s and besides when mine melted down a dpf, I’ve yet to hear a quieter Dmax from factory.The ticking noise could be that you are snesative to the ticking noise that Duramax engines make, some more than others. The valve lash seems to be a noise maker. I hear ticking in my engine, but I believe I'm pretty sensitive to it. A little bit less noisy with 15W-40 oil vs 5w-40.
