It the grips are original to the gun with matching serial number on the back of the right grip, AND have no grip medallions, it's likely from 1920 or slightly later.Pre-Model 29 serial S153734 was shipped in February 1957. Pre-Model 29 serial S154160 was shipped in April 1957. S&W didn't ship in serial number order but there is a good chance your friend's gun shipped in Feb or March 1957.
